In March, Thatu
Founder and Trustee Margery Povall went to South Africa on a family
visit, and took the opportunity whilst there to visit Thatu projects.
Thatu's four starter gardens on the Cape Flats, just outside Cape
Town, are making good progress under the gentle guidance of Ramon
who spends one day a week with each of the schools. Everyone is delighted
with his work.
Principal of
Kannemeyer School, Mr Ridwan Samodien enthuses about the future to
Ramon, Margery and Patrica,
Margery visited two of the four Thatu schools and was impressed
by the dedication and commitment. As the Principal of Kannemeyer
School, Mr Ridwan Samodien told her "The teachers are busy in the
class. Their heart may be in the garden, but they don’t have the
time or the expertise to come into the garden and work with the
children. So we have a great man like Ramon who really puts them
at a different level, the level we need to be at. We are here to
save the earth. We would like the children to believe that this
is a place that we need to look after, to break away from crime,
see positive and make a contribution to society".
Children at
Heinz Park School excitedly crowd Margery Povall
in front of the temporary portacabins which currently house the school.
In one of the poorest areas, Heinz Park, Ramon is working with community
members, teachers and learners alongside cramped prefab, school
buildings. Construction of new school buildings has at last started
so the school garden can soon progress further! The enthusiasm is
humbling and moving the whole project forward.
Windbreaks have been planted and built, designs agreed on, and planting
of seedlings started, but most importantly, the gardens are being
used to support teaching and learning.
