Our aim is to raise £25,000 this year from community fundraising
efforts, corporate donations and Trusts in the UK and elsewhere to
honour our commitments to ongoing projects and to enable us to expand
our operations to other areas.
This barren
area was transformed into a productive garden with Thatu's
help.
Our first projects are to support the creation of community and
school food gardens.
Providing tools and seeds is not enough. We help community initiatives
become more sustainable by finding people and organisations in South
Africa who have the experience and expertise to:
help
people organise to work effectively with one another to make the
most productive use of scarce resources
recycle
available materials (plastic bags, old tyres, cardboard, used
water)
provide
strategies to cope with problems of drought, flood and pests
help
market surplus produce.
The beginnings
of a food garden are developing here.
Our funds pay for essential equipment (such as tools, fencing, water
pipes, plants and fertiliser), intensive training in permaculture
(eco-friendly) gardening and 'through-the-seasons' advice about
sustainable cultivation.
The
challenge may seem overwhelming - but by working with existing organisations
we can benefit from their experience and make a running start.
Just
£5000. will create a 'living learning lab' for a school or
community - giving opportunities to integrate the garden into lessons
and involve parents and the wider community.
