JABULA
Garden Party Pack
Use your
garden to create a food garden in South Africa
Jabula! Means 'celebrate' in South African
languages, which
is why we like to call our garden parties Jabulas.
Your guide to planning and facilitating a garden party
to raise funds for Thatu, UK Registered Charity No.: 1108655
Why a Garden Party?
We are working to raise funds to enable
schools and communities in South Africa to be taught the skills required
to grow food and develop the land sustainably. £6,000 will fund one food
garden project.
So what better way to ask for support in raising funds than to ask you
to use your garden to create a food garden in South Africa! You and your
garden can make a difference.
Here we suggest a few things you need to think about.
Who
will you invite?
You can decide! It is YOUR garden, your
home, your time and energy making the event happen, so YOU decide who
and how many you feel comfortable inviting. It could be you, your close
friends and neighbours.
Some
people are happy to advertise the event within their local community by
leafleting houses, shops and the library, for example. Others may feel
more comfortable 'targeting' their friends and colleagues. Some people
may choose to organise a Garden Party with a local school, church or community
association.
We
do ask you to remember that whilst we hope your garden party will be an
enjoyable event for all, it is also about raising funds - so we would
ask you to think carefully about who is likely to attend and what sort
of stalls and activities may encourage them to spend money.
Best
day and date
You know what will work for you and your
friends. The choice of day and time will depend on who you want to invite.
We
are asking supporters of Thatu to run their garden party from July 2006
onwards. Although we imagine most parties will take place in the summer,
you may want to consider linking your garden party to the harvest festival
or other events.
Timing
Most garden parties will start in the early
afternoon and last for around 3 hours, typically from 2pm - 5pm
What
should you charge for entry?
We suggest that you charge an entry fee.
A minimum might be UK £1.50 to include a raffle ticket, but you could
charge more if you want to include a drink and cake as well?
Ideas
for activities and stalls:
- Activities
for children e.g. face painting, plant potting or flowerpot painting
- A
raffle or tombola, with tickets simply sold at the garden party
- Entertainment
e.g. live music
- Home
made produce and or home grown produce sell well
- Plant
stall - cuttings and plants grown from seed and potted up and sold at
a reasonable price (say 50p each) can raise a surprising amount of money.
- Refreshments
of your choice. Could be anything from Boerewors (South African Sausages)
to a more English Scones and Cream Tea, and everything in between!
- Ask
local crafts people e.g. jewellery makers, potters etc. whether they
would like to have a stall at your garden party - of course, with an
agreed percentage of their sales to go to Thatu
- Auction
of donated items
- Fun
tournaments such as boules or quoits - where the participants pay a
small fee to have a turn, and the winner gets a bottle of sparkling
wine.
A
few tips…
-
Allow plenty of time to plan and prepare.
- Work
out a time plan and agree task dates.
- Brush
up on a few facts about Thatu - this knowledge can persuade people as
to why they should support you!
- Enlist
the help of others. Encourage family, friends and work colleagues to
help.
- When
asking for prizes for raffles and tombolas, rather than cold calling,
try to target organisations, businesses or individuals where you have
a contact.
- People
will ask where the money is being spent. Ensure your fundraising team
know a few tangible facts about where the money will be going.
£6,000 totally sets up a community food garden. You can also refer people
to the Thatu website for
regular feedback on projects and information about how the money you
raised is being spent.
